This picture was taken at Yeshiva Toras Chaim of South
Shore’s groundbreaking in the early 1960’s. Rabbi Chait, then a rov in Far
Rockaway was invited by his chaver from South 9th St. days, Rav Binyomin
Kamenetzky, to address the audience. Reb Binyomin is sitting on the right
side of the podium.
The real interesting part of this picture (gave me the chills when I
realized it…) is the man (frowning) to the left of the podium, Honorary
Judge Joseph Jaspan was at that time the President of Yeshiva Toras Chaim.
He maintained a long and close relationship with R’ Binyomin. His son
Stanley Jaspan, a prominent lawyer who lives in Milwaukee, continues that
relationship to this day. Stanley’s son, Avi learned in the Yeshiva in
Milwaukee and then in the Hills.
Do you know who Avi married? Rav M Dov Harris’s daughter. Rabbi Moshe
Chait’s granddaughter. Get it? These two men had nothing really to do with
each other in the 1960’s – however, hashgocha pratis made them ‘Grand
Mechutanim’
This picture is on the wall behind me in yeshiva… Rabbi Dovid Kramer
